Another one for the Goths! If you're a fan of our undead friends, it's worth experiencing one of the books that started it all. The story is terrific for those after a good, suspenseful gothic horror. It's easy to think that Dracula must be another hard-to-read classic, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The writing holds up really well (after over 100 years, that's quite a feat) and it's genuinely spooky in parts.

Let us state straight up that including this isn't an endorsement of communism. With that out of the way, The Communist Manifesto is among the most influential pieces of writing in the last few centuries. Written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, it inspired a movement and philosophy that would ultimately take over half of Europe within a century of its 1848 publish date. It's also much easier to read than Marx's significantly more thorough work Capital, but that's also available for free if you're up to reading thousands of pages of 19th century economics.

There are several books that are known as "the great American novel" -- Catcher in the Rye, Moby Dick and To Kill a Mockingbird among them. But perhaps the novel with greatest claim to the title is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Twain is regarded as America's greatest humorist and he's one of its most celebrated authors ever. Huckleberry Finn is the book he's most known for and it's a must-read for anyone wanting to familiarize themselves with American literature.

To be sure, Huck Finn isn't the only great American novel you can read for free. Moby Dick gave the world the term "white whale," as well as one of the most famous opening sentences. The book is 170 years old, but it remains a staple of "books you should read" lists everywhere.

Of course, audio books should be used to supplement, and not entirely replace reading. But when used alongside other media, including printed books, ebooks, and reading aloud in person with children, audio books can be another excellent way to instill a love of books and literature in children.

While sites like Audible are popular and provide thousands of titles for adults and children, the cost of purchasing books and membership fees can add up. Luckily, there are thousands of free audio books available for readers of all ages if you know where to look. Here are six of the best sources, some of which offer books for all readers, and some tailored just for kids.

There are also books read by great actors, including Sherlock Holmes read by Sir John Gielguld, as well as classics from Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and categories like Russian Lit and literature from women authors, and fairy tales for kids.

Why listen to audiobooks though? Well, there are probably some books you intend to read, but never get round to it. Classic novels are a great example of this, and most of them are available as free audiobooks.

Stephen King has written some of the best horror books to scare you. So who better to read one of his short stories than the master himself? At the University of Massachusetts Lowell, King read out Afterlife to the audience, and it has now been uploaded to YouTube by the university, free for anyone to watch and listen to.

The Chronicles of Narnia is now a famous movie series, but if you want a taste of the original books, they are free to stream online. Renowned children's literature author Chrissi Hart was given permission to read out the entire seven-book fantasy series on her podcast, and it's still available for listening.

The Great Gatsby is one of a number of classic novels you can read for free on Kindle. But the trouble with the classics is that you never seem to get around to reading them. Instead, try streaming an audiobook version whenever you have some free time. And in the case of The Great Gatsby, it's read by one of the most famous and respected audiobook narrators, Frank Muller.

With any of these audiobooks, you will usually need to listen to them from start to end or remember the point you paused it at. Unlike dedicated audiobook apps, these free audiobooks won't resume playing if you close the window.

Among audiobook apps, Audible is probably the best. While it's a paid service, there's a free trial you can use to download and listen to 1 audiobooks and 2 Audible Originals for free. If you take advantage of it, here are some of the best audiobooks to listen to during your Audible trial.

Review: "I love that Steven's books are so easy to follow. He gives real-life everyday examples on how to apply his techniques. I also appreciate the fact that he always puts a challenge out there for his readers! This book in particular helped me to understand various new techniques of mindfulness, which can be used to overcome any stress or anxiety issues. It is helping me in developing more focus on work without worrying much. Steve has put enough research work into this book and the reference material is in itself a treasure."

Beyond these beloved classics, Spotify also has a whole Spoken Word section dedicated to audiobooks, poems, and other non-musical resources. You will need to create a free Spotify account to access any of these items.

Librivox is a non-profit initiative to record public domain books and release them as free audiobooks. The site boasts over 10,000 projects, with a diverse set of titles ranging from War and Peace to Leaves of Grass to The Dream of the Red Chamber to Anne of Green Gables.

Scribl is a great option for newer releases, with many of the books read by the authors themselves. These free audiobooks are provided in a serialized form, so you can listen to small chunks that fit into your commute.

To keep it fair and square, I limited myself to include only books I either have read, or am currently reading. This way I make sure I only present you with books I have a solid understanding of, and, which are, to my best, 25 year old knowledge, utterly motivating.

Curious fact: This was one of the first commercially successful book series that spread digitally. By 2012, Collins was the best-selling Kindle author of all time, with almost one third of the top highlights coming from her books.10Source: -black-friday.com/2012/03/17/who-is-the-best-selling-kindle-author-of-all-time/Best quote from the book:
